The biggest in the Balkans, Skadar lake – area 356-388 km2 – was not so long ago the protected status of two neighbouring countries – Albania and the former Serbia and Montenegro water and coastal space. Albania has taken under the protection of 495 km2, of which Montenegro is protected almost 900 km2 of water surface and adjacent land. Environmental protection is the most extensive in the Mediterranean basin freshwater pond is a step forward towards the protection of nature.
Two years ago on the island Kosmach on Skadar lake in honor of the restoration of service in the Church of St. George tradition renewed collective wedding. Five pairs of Montenegro, wedlock, said “Yes” and before God, after which the reconstruction of the temple, built in the 14th century by the local feudal lords of the kind of Mrnjavcevic.
Once upon a time Skadar lake was the biggest Bay on the Balkan Peninsula. A large part of this lake belongs to Montenegro, the smaller of Albania. In encyclopedias you can read that its area is 391 km2 and in winter it is poured on 500 km2. Fill the lake as groundwater and rivers morača and crnojevića. Many peoples of the ancient world swam across lake Skadar – the Illyrians, Tatars, Greeks, Romans. In the middle ages on the Islands of hermit monks wrote and copied books here. In many of the nearly 50 Islands there is a monastery or a skete. No wonder the Skadar island called new Athos.
