The biggest lake of Russia
A list of the biggest lakes of Russia rightly tops the pond, whose name got the word “sea”. The Caspian sea is on the border of Europe and Asia and is owned by five States: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan. According to the latest data, its area amounts to 376 000 km2, but this figure is subject to strong fluctuations. Without exaggeration, the Caspian sea has become world famous not only because of its size, but also as one of the most problematic bodies of water.

Baikal is extremely attractive to tourists and naturalists: it’s inhabited by a rich fauna, more than half of which – local exclusive.
Ladoga and Onego are the largest lakes of Russia, and leading European rating. They are quite similar: located on the North-West of Russia, both belong to the basin of the Baltic sea have the same origin. In area of Ladoga lake Onega twice (17 and 9 700 720 km2, respectively). On the lakes many rocky Islands, some of which are widely known for being on the cultural, historical, religious monuments. Although the area of its water surface area (4 500 km2) it is inferior to the Russian Champions, but this is the most Northern really large lake and only about one and a half months of the year is free of ice. More than 80% of the lakes freeze to the bottom each winter, so the flora and fauna consists almost exclusively Arctic species. Through the lake flows the river of the Upper Taimyr, which is the outlet of the lake becomes Lower.
